The images that Keren
creates are carved into plastic plates by the artist only. No one
else could exactly copy the flowing movement that makes these
characters so different. To print the blocks the plates are
rolled with inks using a resist technique that she has been
perfecting for years. Up to five different colors of custom mixed
ink are applied in specifically ordered layers.
"Color is the most
demanding and satisfying aspect of an image's
success," she hints, "Printing color on color
is far more complex than one would imagine. Color has been my
avocation."
The image is then
transferred to the fabric, leather or paper by hand pressure using
a barren. This is usually the final step though overprinting
for special effects is an option, though a very demanding
one.
"This simple method
with such few tools is purely direct and intuitive. After all these
years and all these prints the process is still endlessly
fascinating to me. I keep discovering new variations and keep being
surprised by what is revealed when the block is lifted off the
fabric."
